Inspiring Minds
Year 12 Taster Days at Loughborough University
Inspiring Minds is an excellent opportunity for students thinking about university to learn more about the options available to them. Students will have the opportunity to experience their chosen subject at undergraduate level through a range of taster lectures and workshops, receive university application guidance and take a tour of our outstanding campus with current students.
Furthermore, attending these events can make a valuable addition to any personal statement, helping students to stand out as part of the university application process.
Individual students, as well as school and college groups, are welcome.
Our next events will take place in January 2020, focusing on Sport and Business and Economics subjects. The dates are as follows:
- Sport – Wednesday 22nd January 2020
- Business & Economics – Wednesday 29th January 2020

NEW: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE YEAR 12 STUDY DAYS
 University College, Oxford have a programme of Year 12 subject study days taking place in the spring and summer Terms. These study days are an excellent way for students to gain an insight into potential degree subjects. These will also give high-achieving students a taste of the university experience and ideas for how they can develop their academic interests and skills beyond the classroom. The days are planned as follows:
*Please note, our Politics, Law and History Study Day is specifically for Year 12 students from the UK of Black African, Caribbean or of Mixed Heritage of either Black African or Caribbean heritage.
The application processes run separately for each subject-based study day. Students attend the day individually. To apply students must submit an application and a teacher from their school must support this by submitting a teachers’ approval form. Please note: Help towards travel expenses for these days may be available for some students who otherwise would not be able to attend. This is allocated on a case-by-case basis, for example for students eligible for free school meals.
REMINDER: Y12 GEOGRAPHY STUDY DAY & POETRY COMPETITION
Christ Church College, University of Oxford: Â Geography Study Day Christ Church is delighted to be running a Geography Study Day on 21 February 2020. We welcome applications from Year-12 students who are considering applying to study Geography at Oxford and will be prioritising applications from students who attend UK state schools. The day will include an introduction to Geography at Oxford, a taster lecture in Physical Geography, and a series of interactive academic workshops in Human Geography. The participants will also meet undergraduates who study Geography at Oxford, have lunch in the Christ Church Hall, and go on a tour of the college. Christ Church College also runs an annual poetry competition, which is now open for entries: The Tower Poetry competition is open to students between 16-18 years of age who are educated in the UK. Students are invited to submit poems on the theme of ‘Trees’ by 2 March 2020. Prizes will be awarded to the winning students and their schools. For more information: www.chch.ox.ac.uk/towerpoetry |
GET SET 2020 |
Get Set is a three-day summer school at LIPA (The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) in late July 2020. This is a free summer school for Year 12’s who are interested in applying to study performing arts at university in 2021 entry and aims to help students:

Aston Progression Pathways at Aston University
Aston Progression Pathways (APP) is an 18-month programme that empowers eligible Year 12 students to achieve their goal of studying STEM, Business or Law courses at Aston University. Students on the scheme receive the following benefits:
- Residential summer school
- E-mentoring
- UCAS and personal statement support
- Study skills support
- A contextual offer
This sustained programme of activity aims to raise students’ aspirations, improve their motivation to progress onto Higher Education and provides them with the knowledge, skills and experiences that will enhance their UCAS application.

PwC Sixth Form Conference (Thursday 20th February 2020 9.30am – 2.30pm)
This conference is organised jointly by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Aston University and is aimed at bright Year 12 and 13 students who are expected to achieve at least BBB grades at A-Level and who have a genuine interest in Accountancy, Finance and Business. The conference is held at PricewaterhouseCoopers offices in Birmingham City Centre and gives students the opportunity to learn about studying these subjects and how to put together a strong application, as well as gaining an insight into one of the most prestigious companies in the world. Spaces are limited.

- Arrivals 12:30 for a prompt 1pm start, finish up by 5pm
- Workshops, networking with EY personnel and tour of the offices

- Y12 and Y13 Students
This is going to be a very focused 4-hour workshop event with EY for Y12 and Y13 students who are looking to get into the Tech / Accountancy sector. During the event they will take part in workshops led by leading professionals within the firm, network with EY staff and hear all about their work experience and degree apprenticeship opportunities with some possible fast tracks on offer!
