Apprenticeships for Students

At Plantsbrook we are committed to ensuring students that wish to pursue an apprenticeship are given the correct advice and guidance to ensure they pick the right course, the right training provider and the right employer.

Most apprenticeships are done fully within the employer setting with coursework completed online with a dedicated tutor/advisor either visiting at your place of work or meeting virtually. Alternatively, students can attend college once a week to complete their studies.

Apprenticeships normally take 12-18 months to complete and you also cover Maths and English functional skills.

Apprenticeship courses offer both a qualification and ‘on the job’ work experience. Once completed continuation onto a Level 3 Degree Apprenticeship, university or a permanent contract with your employer is all possible.

One advantage of apprenticeships is no student debt.

What is an Apprenticeship?

  • It’s a real job
  • It gives you the chance to ‘earn while you learn’
  • You are employed, and have a contract of employment direct with the employer
  • It’s a great way to learn skills, gain a qualification and get paid
  • Take between one and four years to complete (depending on level and sector)
  • You gain real work skills and experience
  • You understand how a business works
  • Starts you on your chosen career path

Becoming an Apprentice:

  • You must be 16 or over
  • Not already in full time education
  • You can start an apprenticeship at any time, it’s not just for school leavers
  • They are funded by the government and the employer

Different Apprenticeships:

Level 2 (intermediate) GCSE equivalent

Level 3 (Advanced) A Level equivalent

Level 4,5,6 & 7 (Higher) Foundation Degree and above equivalent

Level 6 & 7 (Degree) Bachelors or Master’s Degree equivalent

Intermediate Apprenticeships

An Intermediate Apprenticeship is the equivalent of five GCSE passes.

Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 2, key skills and a BTEC.

These provide the skills required for the apprentice’s chosen career and allow entry to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Advanced Apprenticeships

An Advanced Apprenticeship is the equivalent of two A-level passes.

Advanced apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 3, Key Skills and a BTEC.

To start an advanced apprenticeship you should ideally have five GCSEs at grade C or above or have completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship.
