Reading for Pleasure and Choice at Plantsbrook School

Reading for Pleasure and Choice is an essential part of a child’s education; having the time to engross themselves into a book that they have chosen is unique, because it frees the pupils from the expectations of the curriculum, and allows them to pursue their interests. Pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure, because we believe that it fosters empathy and emotional intelligence, positive mental well-being, creativity, imagination, and self-identity. It also allows for escapism, enjoyment, relaxation, and the ability to experience new cultures, ideas and worlds.

We, as a school, have collaborated within and across departments to create inclusive and diverse subject-specific reading lists, to ensure that pupils have the greatest opportunity to discover their passions through the medium of reading for pleasure and choice.
