Plantsbrook School is a large, mixed-gender mainstream comprehensive Secondary School, housing around 1500+ students, including approximately 300 sixth formers in our new state of the art facility. We are proud to be an inclusive school.
Supporting students with additional needs is an exceptionally rewarding part of education. The Inclusion Department, alongside the rest of our staff at Plantsbrook School, actively encourage all our students to live out our school motto: ‘Be the best that you can be’ in and out of the classroom.
Staff receive high quality training so they are best able to support students across the school.
These include:
- Cognition and Learning.
- Communication and Interaction.
- Sensory and/or Physical Difficulties.
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health.
We firmly believe that giving students with additional needs the right support and tools promotes independence and enables barriers to learning to be broken down.
Plantsbrook is unique in the Birmingham area as we are currently the only secondary school to house a specialist resource base for up to 20 students with a vision impairment. Access to our Vision Resource Base is only through placement by the Local Authority and students must have an Education Health Care Plan.

Clarifying SEND terminology
Definition of Special Educational Needs (SEN)
A child has SEN if they have a learning difficulty that calls for special educational provision to be made for them. A learning difficulty means that the child has significantly greater difficulty in learning than most children of the same age.
Definition of disability
A child has a disability if they have a physical or mental impairment, and the impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities (i.e. lasts for 12 months or more). The disability prevents or hinders the child or young person from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age.
