Apprenticeships for Students

At Plantsbrook School, we are committed to supporting students who wish to pursue an apprenticeship after leaving school. Our goal is to ensure every student receives the right advice and guidance to help them choose the right course, training provider, and employer for their future career.

What Is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a real job with training, allowing you to earn while you learn. You’ll gain valuable qualifications and practical experience at the same time.

  • You are employed and have a contract of employment directly with your employer.
  • You receive a salary while completing your studies.
  • Apprenticeships combine workplace learning with taught study.
  • Programmes can last between 1 and 4 years, depending on the level and subject area.
  • You’ll develop real work skills and understand how businesses operate.
  • Apprenticeships provide an excellent pathway into your chosen career.

How Apprenticeships Work

  • Most apprenticeships take place in the workplace, with coursework completed online or through visits from a tutor or assessor.
  • Some apprentices attend college one day per week to complete the taught element of their programme.
  • Apprenticeships usually last 12–18 months, although higher-level courses can take longer.
  • You will also study Maths and English Functional Skills if you have not yet achieved the required grades.
  • On completion, many apprentices continue onto a Level 3 or Degree Apprenticeship, progress to university, or secure a permanent job with their employer.
  • Apprenticeships are funded by the government and your employer, meaning there are no tuition fees or student debt.

To start an apprenticeship, you must:

Apprenticeships are open to school leavers, college students, and adults — you can start at any time of the year.
